Indigenous Peoples Participatory Video Messages.
The messages from the Fifth Session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues are online for the world to watch. The video was made by participants at the Fifth Session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues at the UN Headquarters, New York 15 to 26 May 2006, with assistance from Insight (www.insightshare.org).
The video was produced in conjunction with the launch of Insights into Participatory Video: a handbook for the field, a practical guide to setting up and running PV projects in the field.
BARBADOS:
- Making a Difference Community Involvement for a Better Environment
v The video is a unique collection of projects from the Barbados Country Programme which covers climate change mitigation, land degradation, and biodiversity conservation in the marine environment. The project beneficiaries included communities, young people and the disabled. This is the first knowledge product prepared by the newly formed Barbados Environment Community Network (BECON) which is a group of past and present SGP grantees.
v A video which was produced as part of a climate change mitigation project. It illustrates
how an NGO partnered with students and a sole proprietor using a business model.
Students invested by collecting and bringing used vegetable oil to school, which was
collected by the NGO and brought to the sole proprietor for processing into biodiesel and
glycerin. The biodiesel was then sold on the local market. The students received cash for
each litre of oil invested and were able to add to their income stream by managing a small
pop corn business which used a generator powered by biodiesel. Over the project life time,
the environment was protected from approximately 6000 tons of CO2. The project has now
been upscaled with private sector capital.
