2008 James A. Waight Conservation Award- On 18 February 2008, the National Coordinator, Mr. Phillip Balderamos received the James A. Wight Conservation Award. Mr. Balderamos was awarded for his commitment to bird conservation which spans some 25 years, his unwavering advocacy and educational efforts for sustainable natural resources management and for his contribution to community involvement in conservation efforts. The James A. Waight Conservation Award is given to a Belizean individual organization in recognition of their significant contribution nationally or locally to the conservation and enhancement of Belize’s environment. It is given in the name of Belize Audubon Society’s first president and one of its founding members, James A. Waight.

2009 Sello Bicentenario-On October 7th, at the presidential palace “La Moneda”, at its “Patio de las Camelias”, over one hundred attendees were present at the award-giving by Chile´s President Michele Bachelet, for the 9 projects selected from over 100 eligible candidates for the “Sello Bicentenario”. María Contreras spoke on behalf of the winner, “Naturaleza Viva Center”, executing agent of the project “Recovery in degraded land area of Villa Francia”. This Project is funded by the SGP/GEF Chile from 2006 to 2009”.
2008 Sustainable Management of Water-Chile Water Harvesting, a small agricultural community of Alhuemilla – Las Palmas in the north of Chile- which has seen its population decrease over the years because of the effects of the drought on biodiversity and poverty, recently won the Award “Trapping mist in order to perform forestation and reduce firewood consumption”. The award was given for the “Good practices in the sustainable management of water in rural communities” by La Serena University of Chile and Regina University of Canada. The Award was organized by the International Project for Rural Community Water Conservation (TIER2). The joint project with UNDP, the European Union and the GEF SGP has improved the lives of the communities. The community members are now ready to share their experiences with other communities for replication. They also plan more activities such as training workshops and other devices to trap water. For many people in the Alhuemilla community, the initiative represents hope: hope for the future of their children, the land and the survival of their animals. They are assured that their children will no longer abandon their land because of unemployment and isolation.

2008 National Award on New Technologies- SGP Cuba received the Annual Award for new technologies from “La Delegación Local del Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnología y Medio Ambiente (CITMA)” for their project on the use of microhydro to produce electricity to 78 families living in a remote area in Maisi, Guantanamo.
2006 CNN Hero –With a grant from SGP, the Isleta Sur community in Guantanamo successfully transformed a dump of domestic solid waste into a garden. Three hectares of the dump have now been planted with fruit trees, compost is being produced, and a plant nursery and recycling facility for rubber, plastics, and metals was established. The recycling centre is also providing employment for 40 local residents, including 19 women. The community leader was also awarded the National Environmental Award 2006, the top annual prize given by the Ministry for the Environment in Cuba. Click here for more information

2007 National Environment Award- The government of Honduras awarded “The Association of Indigenous Women” of Moskitia, the annual National Environment Award for their contribution to the sustainable management of natural resources. The group counts approximately 600 single mothers and spouses of disabled divers of the Moskitia ethnic group, in the department of Gracias a Dios. These women have transformed their community by creating development projects aiming at protecting the environment by recycling solid waste. The project also generates income to their families. The award includes a trophy, a diploma and 75,000 Lempiras or US $3,970 to be used to acquire different types of equipments for their project
India
2008 Global Green– The efforts of the NGO, Technology Informatics Design Endeavour (TIDE) and the communities have been recognized. They won the title “Energy Champion” and the First Prize (£40,000) in the ASHDEN AWARD. The Title and the Prize were presented by the Nobel laureate Dr. Wangari Maathai. Tide is well known for designing excellent stoves which reduce pollution and put less stress onfuelwood.
Iran
2007 Innovation and Commitment Award - The GEF SGP Iran was nominated by UNDP Country Office to receive the UNDP Administrator’s “Innovation and Commitment Award” during the Global Staff Forum, for their project to reverse the destruction of marine resources while generating income for the Salakh community. They developed coral reefs through building reef pyramids using traditional and local knowledge and capacities and incorporating them in a modern design.
2008 Wetland’s Champion- After the authorities had called the Sirongoli wetland nonrehabitable a group of local retired teachers did not want to believe this and did what ever they could do including: applying for SGP grant, lobbying, construction of canals, opening blocked ones, linking authorities and intersectoral coordination and they finally brought life back to this Ramsar Site.

Equator Prize 2002 Short list - Honey Care Africa Ltd. was shortlisted and awarded $30,000 by The Nature Conservancy (www.tnc.org) (TNC) . Since winning the Equator Initiative Award in Johannesburg in 2002, Honey Care has moved from strength to strength winning other international awards, their honey has been accepted by the European Union for quality, and have been accepted as members of Fair Trade group. 2003 UN Person of the Year Award- As part of the World Day for Environment events held at the Kenya Coast, Ms Guddy Birkigt of Robinson Island was given a cash award of 100,000 Kenya shillings by UNEP, in recognition of the work she and her community are doing at Robinson Island. The event was attended by the Minister for Environment Mr. Kulundu, Dr. Michieka, (Director ,National Environment Management Authority), 3 top UNEP officials, and others. Guddy was the winner of the UN Person of the Year Award in 2003. This SGP project has so far planted 600,000 mangroves, has built 3 bandas for accommodation for visitors, bought two boats for the community, and is working with youths to look after sea turtles.
Kyrgyzstan
2007 “Best Practices Competition in Sustainable Development of Central Asia” – The project works in conservation and rehabilitation of habitat of reptiles (Central Asian Tortoise) included in The Red Book of Kyrgyzstan. The community based organization Jamaat “Aichurok” is leading the project. So far the project results in biodiversity are that 50 hectares with mating places in the center are protected by the community itself, which in turn has started the rehabilitation of natural wood and grass vegetation, increased the birds populationand reduced the risk of fires.

2008 Equator Initiative Award- The Conservation Society of Pohnpei, an SGP grantee, received the award for its work to create linkages between a healthy environment and a healthy economy. CSP's main activities include: supporting artisanal fishing and small-scale mariculture projects (such as sponge and coral farms); advocating for the reinstatement of state-sanctioned marine protected areas within Pohnpei Lagoon; and maintaining a network of seven community-based marine protected areas. Enforcement and monitoring combine traditional techniques with modern technology. Conservation information is disseminated to local schoolchildren and Pohnpei's 34,000 residents through interactive education campaigns.
Namibia
2008 Equator Initiative Award- N?a Jaqna Conservancy, an SGP grantee, received the prize for its work in sustainable management of endemic wildlife and natural resources and the empowerment of the !Kung San* people. Established as a conservancy in 2003, the organization trains local !Kung San as wildlife managers, committee members, and game guards. Objectives include the re-establishment of game populations and sustainable management of forest and woodlands through sound planning, management and monitoring.
Nepal
2008 Ryutaro Hashimoto APFED Award- Mitigation of the Effects of the Carbon dioxide and other Greenhouse Gases by Controlling Slash & Burn Farming. In the area where 95% or more of the total land are susceptible to landslides, the project introduced the application of SALT (Slopping Area Land Technique), including small agro-livestock technology and agro-fruit livelihood as well as micro irrigation system. As a result, 438 ha of slash and burn land brought under agro-forestry, introduced alternative energy technologies, constructed a Green Road with banana trees planted in the road side, and established the plantation of around 600,000 fruit plants. The economic benefit was significant as the net family income has increased 5 times, while formally degraded areas were rehabilitated through sustainable agro-forestry.
Pakistan
2004 Ashden Award - Maisoon Zamir, Escorts Foundation, a Lahore based NGO, funded by GEF/SGP for promotion of fuel efficient stoves in Changa Manga won the Ashden Award for 2004 for their SGP funded project, wins the award for Food (£30,000) for providing rural women around the Changa Manga Forest in Pakistan, with a cooking stove which is both simple in design, yet revolutionary in the way in which it has transformed the lives of the women users in terms of improved health, income and family relations, whilst at the same time reducing their dependence on the protected forest area. Peru
2008 Equator Initiative Award (15 October 2008)- The Asociación de Artesanas de Arbolsol y Huaca de Barro del distrito de Mórrope was one of the winners of the 2008 Equator Initiative Awards. The Asociación was Founded by local women in 2003. The group has worked to recover traditional methods of cotton production that are environmentally responsible and to create positive socio-economic change in the region. The association oversees the planting and harvesting of native cotton varieties using only pesticides from natural sources. In addition to cotton production, the association has been active in managing water resources. Traditional colours of native cotton have been recovered, water resources have been cleaned as a result of better management, and organic cotton is produced for local markets. The group, which began as a women’s organization, has now expanded to include the whole community.For more information click here

2009 Kyoto World Water Grand Prize – SGP project “Ground Water Quality Improvement through Ecosystem Management” was one of the 10 top finalists.
2008 Best practices in Conservation for the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards- The project was one of the top 3 to be selected out of 46 countries as one of the ‘Best practices in Conservation’ for the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards 2008 by the World Travel & Tourism Council. It was also named one of the Top 10 Eco Friendly destinations this year by an online voting system conducted by Travel Community (Travelocity). In 2006 – 2007, BBC also selected the project as one of 9 projects (out of 130) to showcase around the world through their channels. The BBC Wild Life Fund earned approximately 2.3 million English pounds out of this exercise. Each of the nine selected projects received US$100,000. The rest will be used for conservation efforts around the globe. The documentary on turtle conservation was aired several times by the BBC. In addition, the project has been filmed by a French TV channel and in May this year by UN Television for a new flagship programme called “21st Century” which is to be broadcast on BBC world and 400other stations.
2008 Equator Initiative Award- The Sri Lanka Community Development Centre, an SGP grantee, received the Equator Prize for its work to preserve, conserve, and expand the cultivation of indigenous root and tuber crops and promote the sharing of direct and indirect benefits, generate livelihoods, and facilitate the exchange of knowledge through seed banks.
Tanzania
2009 Kyoto World Water Grand Prize – SGP project “Recycling of Waster Water for Irrigation” was one of the 10 top finalists.
2008 WISIONS Award “Water for Energy and Energy for Water”- This innovative project brought a multiple benefit to the villagers through making hybrid solar powdered drinking and irrigation water systems available to this remote rural area. The project increased the availability of water for domestic and irrigation purposes and improved food security as well as income generation through the sale of high value crops. Irrigated farming has offered unemployed youths the opportunity to develop entrepreneurial skills e.g. by earning income through horticulture. The project also has lessened the women’s burden as the women are responsible for fetching water. In addition, waterborne diseases have decreased as low quality water is no longer fetched from local ponds.

2003 UNESCO International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) Award - GEF/SGP grantee, Radio Toco Project, received the award, which included a US$20,000 cash prize and a plaque. The GEF/SGP provided a grant of US$49,389 to the Radio Toco Project (TRI/95/G52/2101/002) in 1997 to initiate the project 'Radio Toco 106.7 FM', the first community radio station in Trinidad and Tobago. The grant assisted the Radio Toco Project in conducting a community survey in the development of the programming content and the broadcast schedule of "Radio Toco"; the development of a marketing strategy to address the sustainability of "Radio Toco", and human resource strengthening of "Radio Toco" in the first year of operation. 2006 Zayed International Prize for the Environment- In February, Mrs. Angela Cropper, co-founder and president of the Cropper Foundation, an SGP grantee in Trinidad and Tobago won the prestigious prize. Mrs. Cropper won the 2006 category for Environment Action Leading to Positive Change in Society. SGP Trinidad and Tobago and the Cropper Foundation have also supported the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment which won the category for Scientific and or Technological Achievements in Environment. 2009 III Prize Coast Zone- The NGO Luna Nueva that carries out a SGP project called Ecología Costera.
