Enhancing Community Engagement in Turtle Conservation Initiatives.
The primary objective is to arrest anthropogenic threats faced by the marine turtles through education and awareness activities with local communities and engagement with local policy makers. This project aims to heighten the level of the local community on turtle conservation related issues, to follow through some of the activities that were previously carried out by MEKAR, so that human-induced threats to the marine turtles, such as egg poaching, accidental by-catch and habitat destruction, can be effectively reduced. These follow-up activities are crucial in continuously sustaining the momentum that MEKAR has created within the community, government agencies, and the corporate sector. In addition, these follow-up activities and several new activities will also target wider stakeholders for bigger impacts. To ensure long-term sustainability of MEKAR, several skills need to be developed, and the project also plans to undertake capacity building trainings to enhance MEKAR’s skills, as a local community organization for the protection and conservation of turtles.
