PROGRAMME TO INCULCATE VALUES AND HABITS TO CARE FOR ENVIRONMENT WITH FOCUSED AND TARGETED APPROACHES REACHING OUT TO 300 TEENAGERS ATTENDING THE BASIC SKILLS TRAINING
Executive Summary

One of the main reasons for environmental degradation is due to lack of awareness and empathy and the need to appreciation the values and uses of environment by the public at large. Malaysia has been a party to many environmental agreements at global and regional levels and there are attempts to incorporate environmental protection programmes into the national development planning. Despite of that there are not many initiatives to systematically engage the public especially the younger generation in inculcating values and habits to care for environment. More importantly teaching them the need to take care for environment and what roles that they could play in protecting them.

The proposed project is designed with the aim of complementing many efforts taken by NGOs and other civil societies reaching out to the youth and students educating them on the need to care for environmental protection. This project will be located at the skills training facilities in Klang. The training facility accommodates three hundred teenagers mainly school dropouts without much potentials for academic excellence. MySkills Foundation a non-profit organization initiated the effort to gather and provide them with basic training and skills in a number of industrial sectors. In addition to that and among other things, MySkills strongly believe these students/trainees should also been given exposure to learn about the need to care for environment. The location and school and hostel premises offer excellent opportunities for MySkills to initiate targeted and focused approaches to engage the teenage trainees in active manner.

Whilst efforts will be taken to introduce the environment subject systematically into the training curriculum and syllabus, practical and hands-on activities will be also be undertaken getting the students to be involved directly. The school have good workforce – certified trainers and instructors by the authorities and volunteers - to be able to guide the students. The neighbourhood and surroundings with commercial and industrial facilities and residential areas will also be approached and consulted to support and involved in the programme. The industrial sites and factories will provide opportunities for trainees to gain hands-on experience and knowledge on the environmental and pollution problems generated by the industrial activities and the ways to mitigate them.
