KNOWLEDGE ENHANCEMENT OF THE COMMUNITY THROUGH CAPACITY BUILDING FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND OZONE SPECIFICALLY IN AIR-CONDITIONING INDUSTRY IN MALAYSIA
This project is in line with other GEF-SGP’s chemicals projects. This is a knowledge enhancement project targeted at the general public and consultants to raise awareness to the national HCFC phase out programme and how the programme will be reducing the importation and use of HCFC 22 in air conditioners in the country. The national HCFC phase out management plan identified split unit air conditioners as the largest contributors of HCFC 22 use in Malaysia. These units are commonly used in household and offices. This project aims to enhance the knowledge of the public with the hope of reducing the procurement of HCFC 22 based air conditioners.
Objectives:
This project hopes to build the knowledge base among the public to play an active role to reduce the
consumption of HCFC 22 in the country. This in turn ensures the compliance of Malaysia to our international obligations as well as protects the ozone and environment.
Project Activities:
? Advertise on online newspaper portals the existence of different air conditioning technologies and where the readers can go to get more information on the different air conditioning technologies and how to size and buy one.
? Production of alternative technology information through leaflets and environmental shopping bags which says “Avoid HCFC in air conditioners” which will be distributed to air conditioner retailers, MACRA hosted events, MACRA members, etc. A website link will be put on the bag to direct readers to MACRA’s website for additional information
? Dissemination of leaflet information on the MACRA website
Expected Outputs:
? There will be a reduction in the purchase of HCFC 22 based air conditioners by the general public and on public projects
? Increased procurement of “greener” air conditioning systems
? Reduction of HCFC 22 imports into Malaysia which contributes to reduced ozone depletion substances used in Malaysia
