Access to Spate Irrigation in Masberiah, Wadi Zabid, Dabas district, Hodiedah Governorate
Al-Masberiah is located some 15km east of Al-Jarahi city on the main road branching from Hodiedah-Taiz at Al-Jarahi city leading to Ibb Governorate. Wadi Zabid is one of the major Wadi systems drain flood water from western mountains towards the Red Sea. Wadi systems in the foothills are steep and very narrow in some locations cause violent floods. Farmers reclaimed the land on Wadi sides where topography permit them to sustain their livelihood encourage by water availability from flood and following seepage for six months per year. Cultivation on wadi sides confined to cash crops that can provide farmers better returns to sustain their families’ livelihood. In return and govern by topographical nature of the area, sustaining land resources and safe-irrigating it are the major challenges due to high erosion caused by flood.
Al-Masberia is one of these location constitute high fertile land 22 ha. That is planted by cash crops e.g. fruits, cereals and fodders and vegetables. The land is farmed by 34 families with over 400 inhabitants. Among the farmers are 30 sharecroppers.
