Agriculture Alternatives and Livelihood Development
Ban Paen, Phoukout district, Xiengkhouang Province, it is regarded as an outback community and most of its residents are farmers. Subsequently, the majority of young people and those working ages have left home to seeking opportunities elsewhere; only those elder and very young remained. As the result, business activity and average income per head per year are low. The problem of this community is having less farmland and many families cannot grow enough food for consumption, food shortage and ineffective law enforcement lead to social and environmental destructions including slash and burn practices, illegal logging, bushfire for hunting, unmanaged harvest of wild produces, fishing with poison or dynamite etc. Therefore, the project aim is to help and to recover the lost jungle and water resources through sustainable agriculture/organic farming practices, agriculture alternatives, agroforestry and biodiversity protection to the target community by working closely and in full cooperation with the local authorities to enforce forest and environmental laws, designing and planning for new agriculture alternatives for the target group and project’s participants and conducting formal training and capacity building to target group on environment, organic farming, agroforestry and new agriculture alternatives.
