Project Results
|
|
1. Contributed to the evolution of an electric vehicle policy in the city of Colombo. (Write-up by Stephen Gitonga of CPMT New York presented at the UNFCCC COP11/MOP1 in Montreal Canada in 2005 at website http://sgp.undp.org/downloads/CC%20Policy%20-%20ENGLISH.pdf
2. Amendment to the Motor Traffic Act affected to register electric vehicles in Sri Lanka. For a long period this was a stumbling block, but due to this initiative and the NGO's persuasive attitude this could be removed.
3. A new H S Code was created in the Customs Code by the Director Fiscal Policy of the Ministry of Finance which affords a 5% waiver of duty on E.Vs. With these amendments at present there are several companies importing E.Vs to Sri Lanka.
4. The project attempted to demonstrate the viability of a zero emission electric three wheeler scooter as a public transport taxi, train unemployed youth to operate and maintain the taxi and produce vehicle parts in order to assemble the vehicles locally.
5. After a process of trial and error the project was successful in demonstrating its results to the Kandy City officials who will consider using the model for public transport within the city and in the Botanical Gardens.
6. A BOI company has been formed under the name "Ceytro Lanka" (pvt.) Ltd. with Australian partners to manufacture three wheeler taxis in Sri Lanka. Prospective buyers would be Ministry of Tourism, Kandy Shopping Mall, pivate sctor eo-friendly hotels.
