Water-powered paddy pounder - observation & finding from project site visit ,Feb 09
As it flows across Mae Woei Village, one small river is named Mae Woei River. With a lowest flow-rate of about 80 litres/second in summer, community members use them to turn a turbine and then a pestle to pound paddy - a local technology applied by this community about a decade ago. During high-level water rainy season , community members resort to traditional way of pounding, i.e. manual energy. At an estimate, daily output of this water paddy pounder is 15-20 kg of rice- enough for a few days of a family consumption. About 10 units like this one were seen within 300 meters along the river.
