Project Details & Results

The main objective of this project is to conserve River Namwi in the view of increasing productivity of Mwasha irrigation canal in Masama East Ward. The project also has the objective of promoting food and cash crop production in order to improve household food security and reduce income poverty.
This project will work to enhance the capacity of leaders and farmers on scheme management skills so as to enhance operation and maintenance of the irrigation system. The project will achieve these objectives through rehabilitation of Mwasha irrigation canal and tree planting along the river.

The project will emphasize on community participation.

Capacity - Building Component
Participatory aproach:The project intends to train community on proper water management,operation and maintenance of the irrigation furrow.
Training:Training is investment in human capital- The envisaged training to be imparted to the community will make them acquire knowledge and skills which will have long term effect that will promote sustainability.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The project will enhance agro-business leading to improved living standards.

Gender Focus
The project will reduce workload to women as there will be reduction in distances from the water source.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
The project will benefit the natives of the project area.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Public awareness will be raised on the importance of tree planting, conservation of water resources and prevention of land degradation .

Inovative Financial Mechanisms
Project has been financed by the Group in collaboration with COMPACt project.

Project Results
The project has planted 10,500 trees of different species along river Namwi.

The project has managed to rehabilitate by lining 200 meters of the mwasha canal.

The project has trained farmers in Bondeni, Mawisi and Lemira village on soil and water conservation techniques.

The rehabilitation of mwasha irrigation canal has increased the land under irrigation from 185ha to 300ha.
