Project Details & Results

The project aimed to establish a mechanism of household plastic management, which indirectly reduces the emission of POPs (dioxins and furans) and directly reduces the amount of waste and also littering in the communities. This project is a good practice replication of the project finished by the GEF SGP grantees environmental associations Planetum and Sonchev rid. More specifically this project takes the successfully developed model of collecting PET and other plastic through primary schools (5 primary schools in the Municipality of Chair, Skopje) and further evolve with added environmental education component. Project activities included:
Establishing a school teams for collecting and municipality working team,
Public awareness campaign on POPs and plastic collecting, its use and educate on the consequences and danger if burnt
Design and publishing of the environmental playbook for pupils and informative flyer for parents
Environmental education targeting school pupils on importance of POPs and PET collection,
Organising PET collection by placing waste bins in 5 schools and purchasing 20 machines for minimizing the bottle’s volume.

Project Results
- Over 8936 participants (pupils and teachers from 5 schools in the Municipality Cair, parents, employers of the Local Municipality Cair) actively involved in the initiative for plastic collection (55 environmental school hours, 30 environmental presentations, organized 2 interschool competitions on plastic sculptures, organized group of Eco detectives and eco monitors including 60 children, regular collection of plastic).
- Established functional system of selection, collection, transport and sell of the plastic in 5 primary schools (1414 kg collected for the period of 8 months)
- Set of educational materials were prepared and distributed among pupils and citizens: 500 copies of posters in Macedonian and Albanian language, 200 copies of poster in Turkish language, stickers, IDs for the most active participants (eco detectives and eco monitors, Information container signs etc.
- Wide media coverage of the project activities with monitoring and announcing the results in the local radio, newspaper, National TV, internet.
