Conservation of Soko Springs through expanded Construction of Cattle Troughs (TAN/COMPACT/GEF-CORE/OP4/Y1/07/01)

Project Details & Results
Soko spring is located in the lowland part of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the spring is surrounded by pastoralist and farmers a situation which creates water users conflict. The Village communities have organize themselves by setting areas within the spring for cattle drinking , for collection of water for domestic use and washing. All this activities are done within or near the spring causing destruction of the spring regime and pollution. The farmers also depend on this water for irrigating their farms. This caused conflict among farmers and pastoralist as most of times cattle’s are destroying cultivated lands.
The project main objective is mitigation of water related conflicts between farmers/domestic user and cattle keepers by providing a cattle trogth for cattle to drink far from the spring. The trougth will be located on the same direction with the area for acharicide treatment dam. The project will aslo plant trees near the spring as the area has been degraded by larger heard of cows, sometimes the heards reach up to 10,000 cows a day at the spring.
Setting different zones of use at the spring will reduce water pollution from cow dung at the spring as the water is used for domestic purpose and will also reduce the desruction of the spring regime.
