enhancing the coastal community participation in conservation and sustainabdle use of mangrove forests through silviculture innovations. (KEN/SGP/OP4/CORE/07/02)

Project Details & Results
The proposed project aims at a holistic approach of addressing mangrove deforestation through capacity building to the fisher community (women, youth, men) on sustainable use of mangroves through alternative livelihoods like silviculture along the Kenyan Coast. This will be achieved through extensive environmental educational activities and experience-based learning, basic participatory research at community level as well as Community empowerment, livelihood initiatives and Natural Resource Management strategies. The community will be involved in three silviculture activities (bee keeping, fish/crab farming and mangrove planting/management) which are in line with the Small Grants country program.
Overall, the project will target to reduce the vulnerability of the mangrove wetland brought by indiscriminate mangrove cutting as a result of extreme poverty of families thriving in Kenyan coast by bringing in direct income opportunities to these local communities capitalizing from this wetland and other complimentary natural resources thereby improving their way of living.
