Project Details & Results

The first phase of Brush against Power Saw project was funded by the COMPACT Initiative in 2002 during OP2. Project activities, which included paintings of murals in public areas, such as schools and markets, were implemented in the rural and urban areas of Meru, Nanyuki, Nkubu and Naro Moru. These areas cover mainly the northern parts of Mount Kenya World Heritage Site.

Activities under the second phase of the scale-up project will be carried out in the southern and eastern parts of Mt. Kenya and will include painting of murals in commercial enterprise premises, schools and other social institutions such as church halls. The paintings will be done by local artists who worked with Tree Is Life Trust during the first phase and their professional counterparts. Other activities will include production of educational awareness materials targeting schools and the wider community.

The primary goal of the project is to positively influence the attitude of local residents who reside in close proximity to the Mt. Kenya forests, to enhance individual and collective responsibility in conserving the resources of the forests.

Notable Community Participation
The local schools and business persons voluntarily donate wall space for painting of murals that would serve to educate community members. The forfeit earnings from corporate companies that would lease the walls for commercial ads.

Gender Focus
Murals focus on Youth, men and women to encourage them to participate in conservation activities

Project Results
When completed, the project will have trained an additional 15 local artists on how to paint large environmental murals. The project will also have painted 33 murals on the southern side of Mt. Kenya in and around the towns of Embu, Karatina, and Nyeri. Project brochures will be produced and distributed, several project-related articles will be drafted and published, and the Brush Against Power Saw section of the Tree Is Life website will be expanded and updated. Overall, the project will create environmental awareness and encourage participation in environmental groups among the residents of southern Mt. Kenya. It is expected that the project's message will reach at least 100,000 residents.
