Project Details & Results
The Fondes Amandes Community Reforestation Project (FACRP) participated in the Green Wave Initiative which is a global education and public awareness campaign for Biological Diversity.
The FACRP Green Wave Tree Planting Caravan focused strongly on schools, both Primary and Secondary. The caravan had a series of interactive presentations designed to improve the prevention capabilities, response and readiness of vulnerable communities to natural and man-made disasters, such as loss of forest cover and the importance of flora and fauna within their watershed.
The caravan and Green Wave activities helped to build environmental awareness through interactive and educational presentations along with the tree planting activity sessions highlighting the benefits of forest and people with a special focus on biodiversity conservation and sustainable livelihoods.
Capacity - Building Component
Students and other young peoples' capacity was developed in their knowledge of biological diversity, especially that of the local environment in Trinidad and Tobago.
Gender Focus
Students from both girls and boys schools actively participated in the tree planting exercise.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
The local media covered the Green Wave activities quite widely in which greatly helped to promote the aim of protecting local and global biodiversity.
Project Results
The project worked with schools, community members and other stakeholders to plant trees on 22nd May, 2009 (International Day of Biological Diversity) and be a part of the Green Wave global effort. Eight (8) schools participated with hundreds of students getting involved in the tree planting exercise.
Over three hundred (300) trees were planted on the Fondes Amandes Hill in Trinidad on 22nd May 2009. The trees planted included indigenous fruit trees, hard woods and ornamental trees (such as cashew, hog plum, mahogany, acacia and cedar). Plants and gardening tools were distributed to the schools and as prizes for students in an interactive learning session with members of the FACRP and the young people who participated. Environmental songs were sung and games highlighting local environmental issues were played.
Even after the project's closure, schools still went to Fondes Amandes to plant more trees and maintenance of the seedlings that were planted is ongoing.
The Green Wave day itself was such a success that one of the participating girl's high schools made a request for FACRP to accommodate more classes totally 119 students who came out to plant hundreds of more trees the following week.
