Project Details & Results

To improve the livelihoods of Kenya communities living in remote areas by providing them with alternative source of energy.ITDG will backstop a community in Chuka to distribute the electricity by installing a generatorm, constructing a power line and distributing the power in a community industrial park. In phase II the community will also use the same power to pump water to a central place and then reticulate it to their houses. The project is expected to reach a core group of 200 households but will eventually serve a total of about 10,000 people.

Notable Community Participation
A group of 200 registered members from the community at Kaanwa village were involved in providing all unskilled labour for this project which was valued at US$ 20,000.

Capacity - Building Component
The community learnt how to organize themselves into a coorperative to own the electricity, and also learnt how the renewable energy is connected to global climate change.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The proceeds from selling the electricity will eventually go back to the community to conduct microenterprises

The 200 members are men and women at nearly 50:50 ratio.

The project promotes mitigation of global climate change by reducing use of fossil fuels and reducing use of fuel wood for tobacco curing.
