Project Details & Results

This project is especially targeting women groups working at the shores of Lake Victoria. It tries to reduce the amount of fuel required to smoke fish, fuelwood which is not locally availlabe due to heavy defforestation, by 75%.
The project aims at providing an alternative energy saving kiln which will reduce the burning of fossil fuels, thereby reducing greenhous gas emissions leading to global warming and at the same time enhance the community quality of life. The women groups will be able to generate income from selling the smoked fish.

Notable Community Participation
This project is based on a women's group who will participate by organizing fishing and using the new constructed smoking kiln.

Capacity - Building Component
The community and the NGO will learn about the technology in an improved fish smoking kiln and how it will help mitigate global climate change by using less fuel wood.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The women's group will make more income per given time as the kiln will be able to smoke more fish at lower costs of wood.

Gender Focus
This project will be executed by a women's group at Homa Bay to help improve their financial status while addressing one of GEF's thematic areas.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
