Project Details & Results

To develop a project proposal by involving local communities for the conservation of Baluchistan Black Bear.

The main objective of the project is to prepare a detailed proposal for conserving Balochistan Bear and its habitat along with other floral and faunal biodiversity of the area with active community participation.

Surveys will be conducted in the area to determine the population and status of Balochistan Bear, its ecological needs, threats to species and its conservation needs, as well as to determine the general biodiversity of the area. Identification of communities near the important population cities of the species, rapid apparaisals of selected communities to determine their socio-economic priorities and integrate them with conservation objectives as well as identification and analysis of use regimes of wild living natural resources.

The result is anticipated to be a detailed proposal for community based conservation of Balochistan Black Bear.

Notable Community Participation
The project conducted a PRA exercise in the project area and invloved consultants to develop the project proposal for GEF/SGP funding. The proposal was presented to GEF/SGP NSC in August 1999 and was approved for one year.

Project Results
A proposal prepared was submitted to the NSC for its review and approval. The project was approved for one year to implement the social mobilization component of the proposal and mobilization of tribal chiefs to build consensus for the establishment of community protected area for conserving the Balochistan Black Bear.
