Country: UNITED REPUBLIC OF TANZANIA
Grantee: Traditional Energy Dev. and Environment Organization - TATEDO (Non-government Organization)
Focal Area: Climate Change
Op. Program: OP6 - Promoting the Adoption of Renewable Energy by Removing Barriers and Reducing Implementation Costs
Project Type: Full
Operational Phase:   Phase 1
Dates: 12/1997 - 12/1998
Grant Amount: 25 724,00 USD
Project Status: Satisfactorily Completed
Project Types: Demonstration, Capacity Building

Project Details & Results

-To enhance accessibility to improved energy services for socio-economic development and environmental conservation for the majority of the urban and peri-urban people through increased production and use of improved/fuel efficient stoves and ovens.
-To popularize application of low carbon fuel efficient cookstoves and ovens as an effective measure in conserving the environment.
-The project will initially cover the city of Dar es Salaam and Kibaha district in coast region. In future, the project will spread to areas with high population density relative to natural woodfuel resources such as Shinyanga, Mwanza and Kagera.

Notable Community Participation
Community participation in awareness raising seminars and exhibitions on the importance of low carbon cookstoves for mitigation of climate change.

Capacity - Building Component
(1) Community members especially women and Youths trained on how to manufacture low carbon cookstoves.
(2) Community members trained on how to establish and run viable low carbon cookstoves manufacturing.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
(1) Wide adoption of fuelwood efficeint technologies reduce pressure on natural forests for fuelwood;
(2) The low carbon characteristic of fuel efficient stoves reduce levels GHG emmissions
(3) Less consumption of fuelwood generates income through cost saving.

Gender Focus
(1) Fuel efficient cookstoves reduce consumption of fuelwood. this relieves women from fuelwood collecting tasks.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
project targeted indigenous people who are the main users charcoal and fuelwood.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Project helped to increase public awareness on the need to reduce GHG emmissions through wide adoption of fuel efficient low carbon cookstoves.

Policy Impact
This project provided inputs during formulation of National energy Policy of 2000.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms
Project financing was done jointly by SGP and NGO.

Project Results
(1) Project has promoted wider use of fuel efficient cookstoves.

(2) Wide adoption of low carbon fuel efficient cookstoves has reduced GHG emmissions. Amount to be determined.

(3) Project has generated employment through youth groups who trained on how to fabricate the cookstoves.
