Consolidation of a School Biogas project, Kaole Secondary School, Bagamoyo (TAN/00/04)


Project Details & Results
The project has benefited the global environment by replacing fuelwood with biogs in cooking and heating. it is also used for lighting. The primary objective was to consolidate the school biogas plant in order to make it a model for learning and replication by other schools and public institution and also preserve mangrove forests by eradicating the use of fuelwood at school by 100%.
Notable Community Participation
School community participated in the construction of digesters. Biogas systems were installed by technicians.
Capacity - Building Component
Selected members of the School community were trained to take charge on operations and maintenance of the biogas plants.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Use of biogas int he school has provided budget relief due to the fact that the school no longer buys fuelwood. SAvings have been channeled to expenditures that improves livelihoods.
Gender Focus
Project focussed on women and men at the school.
Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
Indigenous peoples were exposed to the biogas technology and seemed to be attracted by its simplicity and yet effective performance.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Project has helped to promote public awareness on biogas technology through demonstrative effects. Wide use of biogas reduce GHG emmissions leading to reduction of global warming.
Policy Impact
Project provided positive policy feedback to the effect that biogas use was feasible at household level as well as institutional level.
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
Project financing was supported by SGP, Africa 2000 Network and school communities, which created, a good partnership between SGP, Africa 2000 Network and the school community.
Project Results
- Technical Feasibility: Project helped to demonstrate that cooking on biogas is feasible at household level and Institutional level.
- Policy Impact: Project provided a useful policy impact to the effect that biogas was an effective substitute to fuelwood for cooking as adcovated for in the National Energy Policy.
