Project Details & Results

Education and research for the development of a sustainable technology and resource management plan for the communities surrounding the Lake Baao.

This project intends to do the following: produce a environmental baseline data and community profile of the barangays in Lake Baao; produce case studies on lake resources management; conduct capability building activities for project partners; develop and institutionalize community-based management plans at the barangay levels; and formation of a tripartite council of leaders.

Notable Community Participation
Extensive community participation in biophysical resource assessment and the development of community-based resource management plan.

Capacity - Building Component
Trainings included: Leaders Course on Lake Ecosystems, Lake Management Course, and Instructional Plans for Elementary Teachers.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The project documented current livelihood activities in the area, especially on organic farming and natural fishing.

Gender Focus
Although not explicitly stated in the project design, women participated in the development of a community-based resource management plan and in piloting an ecology course in the primary school in the community.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
The project promoted awareness on global environment, particularly on the lake ecosystem. The project generated a database on Lake Baao and published a resource book.

Project Results
The project created a certain level of impact on the community's awareness and their technical understanding of the lake and marshland ecosystem - local residents have come to appreciate how a lake ecosystem related to their daily living.

The implementation scheme included both awareness building and capability building activities towards comnmunity mobilization for biodiversity conservation.

The project demonstrated the importance of findings the balance between the popular opposition campaigns as urged by local communities and continuing education as demanded by the resource management project.

This project showed that environmental concern taken up at the grassroots level have a bonding effect on other local issues such as land reform, basic social services, foreign debts, and gender issues.
