Project Details & Results

Project location:Salakh village in Qeshm (Lat./Long. : 26.631419;55.568848)
This is a pilot project in Qeshm Island for the rehabilitation of the natural marine resources through an indigenous method of artificial reefing. Initial studies will be carried out to combine the indigenous and scientific knowledge based on which environment friendly materials will be constructed for artificial reefing. Once the process of artificial reefing is completed the designated area will be secured and guarded by the local fishermen. A management plan for sustainable fishing will be drawn by the locals and fishing cooperatives. The locals will also be engaged in facing threats to the natural resources. The entire process and lessons learned will be filmed and documented in Farsi and English in addition to the educational brochures. Finally, a workshop will be held in Tehran and Qeshm for the dissemination of best practices.

Project Results

  • Coral reefs are one of the hotspots of biodiversity and this project attempted to create artificial reefs to support biodiversity and fisheries in a very ecologically sensitive area (southern Qeshm Island, Persian Gulf). It is worth noting that as a result of this project a “No-Take” Zone was established by local fishermen.
  • It is too early to anticipate the livelihood benefits and income generation aspect of this initiative, however, at least instead of exploiting their natural marine resources, now the local community has the opportunity of using it more wisely and saving it for future generations.
  • This project has been quite successful in exploring the local know-how and capabilities, and involving the community in all aspects of project implementation.
  • The results of the project will be critical in raising awareness about reef ecosystems
  • Women were not directly involved in this project as the fisheries is in general a men’s job in this area.
  • Policy focus was great as the project was well-received in the national Fisheries Company (Shilat) and Salakh region now acts as a pilot site for artificial reefs at national level.
  • As the first project that was conducted on Qeshm Island with collaboration of local community, this project also triggered 3 more projects in Qeshm Island which helped in sustainability of conservation efforts.
  • The local community remains quite active in monitoring the reefs.
  • A new design was suggested by local people for building “pyramid” artificial reefs. This design allows for maximum space for settlement of coral and nesting of fish. It also has the advantage of being inexpensive, environmentally friendly, based on traditional knowledge, and scientifically approved.
