Project Details & Results
The GEF/SGP has been functional in Turkey since 1993. To date, the programme supported over 60 projects implemented by more than 40 local and national NGOs. This programme has generated a rich package of best practices, lessons learned and experiences in applying sustainable development with real communities, by real people and in real socio-economic circumstances. In addition it has managed to virtually create a unique "environmental community" comprised of more than 40 NGOs that have received support from this programme, and still expanding.
This success has energised the need for the establishment of a unique network based on modern information technology for the support of this community of NGOs and utilising the strength of information for moving towards more creative implementation of sustainable development.
The SGP Turkey Coordination Team builts a partnership with Underwater Research Society (SAD), Bird Research Society (KAD), and Bugday Society for Supporting Ecological Livelihood (Bugday) through 3 Projects, namely:
- SGP Networking
- Communication of SGP Activities and Projects (inc. technical support to the programme and to the projects to enhance their web pages and improve the projects printed materials)
- SGP's Outreach (inc. the publication of promotional materials for the SG Programme)
This project defines the "Communication of SGP Activities and Projects" which is a part of the above-mentioned ensemble of three projects. It should be considered within the context of this "ensemble" of partnership with National SGP Coordination Team and the rest of the partners.
Some of the main tools of the Partnership for Communication of SGP Activities and Projects are:
- Improve and manage the SG Programme's web page;
- To provide technical support to SGP Projects in building their Web Sites and improve their link with GEF/SGP;
- Provide technical service for SGP projects for designing and producing of educational and promotional materials;
- Introduce and update through the web, information on SGP projects and other related information provided together with the National SGP Coordination Team and the NGO networking group.
Capacity - Building Component
The project has a major capacity building role, in that provides a number SGP NGOs with technical support, mainly design, for the preparation of web sites for their projects and their publications or promotional materials.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
This particular project, although not specifically addresses global environmental issues, is a major tool in promoting the achievements of the Small Grants Programme in Turkey by designing and managing a SGP web site in Turkish. Therefore, in a way this project will be highlighting the importance of global environmental concerns, through the information dissemination related to the activities of SGP in the GEF focus areas.
Project Results
One of the objectives in the Country Programme Strategy has been "to increase the visibility of the GEF/SGP at the national and international levels" (obj.2). Accordingly;
- A web-site for GEF/SGP in Turkey has been created and linked to other web-sites, including those of the global GEF/SGP site and the UNDP Turkey.
- The informative materials on the programme have been improved in Turkish for easy reference and consultation by the NGOs.
- All appropriate platforms have been used to publicise further the GEF/SGP operations and achievements within the country.
- One of the lessons learnt in the programme has been that communication at the project level is often most effective. Visibility is being an explicit concern, the projects are now being asked to work more closely with the National SGP Coordination Team and the Communication Group for their promotional materials.
