Project Details & Results

The project takes a two pronged approach to abating land degradation. In the first instance through rehabilitating areas that have been serverly degraded. In saying this, the project will look into introducing energy efficient wood stoves in 20 households in the village and applying sustainable farming practices. The second approach looks at working with the KwaZulu Natal Wildlife Authority in conserving the Oribi Nature Reserve through establishing an eco-tourism venture in the area.

Notable Community Participation
The NGO, Keep the Dream, has been working with this community since 1980 when conflict over resources developed into a politicised dispute in the early 1990's. The organisation facilitated the establishment of the Mawuleni Community Development CBO and now strive towards making a meaningful contribution in uplifting the local community. The local Tribal Chief and the Development Committee has fully endorsed the project proposal.

Capacity - Building Component
The project is aimed at developing capacity at two levels, one in relation to the established CBO where the Keep the Dream Association will mentor the CBO in implementing the project. On the second level the project aims to introduce sustainable land use options for example sustainable farming and enhancing energy efficiency through workshoping the principles of energy efficiency and sustainable farming then applying it in practice.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Sustainable livelihoods is a component of the project. The community aims to increase income through an eco-tourism venture. The SGP supported project supports the eco-tourism venture through a feasibility study.

Gender Focus
It is envisaged that mainly women and youth will be targetted in this project.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
The project targets the Mawuleni Tribal Area under Chief K.A. Cele serving under the Royal King Goodwill Zwelithini. The Zulu Nation forms part of the indigenous people of South Africa.
