Project Details & Results

During the past socialism, the country had many state owned tree nurseries in northern Mongolia, especially in Selenge region. In early 1990s, when Mongolia started shifting to a market economy, the forestry sector has completely failed and practically all tree nurseries had to have closed down, except a few. With issuance of Community Forestry Regulations by Ministry of Nature and Environment in 1998, many communities in Selenge region are now interested in tree nurseries.
Tunhel village used to be one of the areas where most terrible forest destructions took place over the last 35-40 years.
This grant is to assist local residents of Tunkhel village in establishing a tree nursery to rehabilitate destructed forest mountains around the village.
4 greenhouses were put up. Seeds of tree different trees were planted in the greenhouses. The growing rate is about 80%. Over 20,000 seedlings were raised in 2004 and 40,000 seedlings in 2005. From the spring of 2006, they will start selling 2 year old seedlings for afforestation and reforestation purposes.

Notable Community Participation
Local residents are the main participants of this project who are involved in the tree nursery activity with their full intention to rehabilitate destructed forest mountains around their village.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Public awareness raising is the next activity of this project that can advocate its fruitful activity to the public.

Project Results
A community owned tree nursery has been established to produce 30,000-50,000 tree seedlings every year. In the first year, the nursery raised over 20,000 tree seedlings, and in 2004 the number had increased up to 40,000 seedlings. In 2006 the community will make some US $ 350 from selling 20,000 seedlings.
