Project Details & Results

Juniper is one of the most valuable plants which is under serious threat of extinction in Mongolia due to over harvesting. Juniper grows only in a few high mountains in central, southern and western Mongolia. One community inhabiting in South Gobi province asked for some support to protect and rehabilitate juniper before it becomes extinct.
The grant is given to experience cultivating juniper in the Gurvan Saikhan Mountain in South Gobi province. This is will be the first community experience to cultivate juniper in Mongolia.
Two places are covered by the project. One Juniper growing area is in a Gurvan Saikhan Mountain valley. The entrance to the mountain valley is now controlled by a community ecotourism camp set up by the community itself. Some rehabilitation efforts were taken by the community, growing juniper artificially. In the other area which is close to irrigation system, over 700 branches of juniper were planted and irrigated to be grown artificially.

Notable Community Participation
South Gobi local people will be straightly involved in this activity as this is a valueble herb that grow in its province.

Women and men are both will be equally involved in the activity.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
Participants are indigenous.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Public awareness is essential as the project's aim to advocate how juniper could be protected and cultivated.

Project Results
A valley of Gurvan Saikhan special protected area in the South Gobi, where Juniper grows, has been taken under a strict community control. The mouth of the valley is now regulated with passage control equipment. A community tourist camp has been established with their own contributions in the valley. Artificial growing of Juniper is being practiced in two areas, one is near the tourist camp and the other in a specially selected area close to the only tree and vegetable growing field of Dalanzadgad village.
