Project Details & Results

The project will promote energy efficiency and the adoption of renewable energy in rural and peri-urban communities in KwaZulu Natal through removing cultural, socio-economic and technical barriers to alternative technologies. The project falls within operational programme 5 and 6. The project will develop the capacity of the GREEN Network and its partner organisations to mobilise and implement projects that foster sustainable nergy practices. It also intends to achiev public awareness of the RE/EE in pilot communities and to achieve intergrating RE/EE in local government policies and plans.

Notable Community Participation
The project was designed through a planning grant, which was used to hold a participatory workshop with 50 community based organisations located around the Pietermaritzburg District in KawZulu Natal. A report of this proceedings of the workshop was attached to the project proposal for reference. Furthermore, the project during its implementation aims to undertake a participatory assessment of the energy needs in the pilot communities.

Capacity - Building Component
Capacity building is a central component of the project and will be achieved through output three and four of the project. The project's third and fourth output involves training the community organisers to undertake public awareness projects using mobile demonstration units developed in output four.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Sustainable livelihoods is not included as a project component.

Gender Focus
Gender is a central component of the project. The project adopts this approach based on the South African Participatory Poverty Assessment that found women to put energy high up on their priority list based on lighting, safety, cooking and human resource input.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
The project activities are aimed at the peri-urban and rural poor rather than a specific indigenous group.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Awareness and capacity development is a central component in the project and is intergrated in all the project outputs.
