Project Details & Results
The project's aim is to limit land degradation through developing capacity of community members of the causes of land degradation and rehabilitating 8.5 ha of degraded land. This will be achieved through working with the District Municipality, the traditional authority, the Department of Land Affairs and Agriculture and the Mpumalanga Parks board. The project falls within OP 15, namely sustainable land management, complying witgh the objective to mitigate the causes and negative impact of land degradation.
Notable Community Participation
Community members participated in the development of the initial proposal and is expected to contribute actively to the further development of the proposal.
Capacity - Building Component
The project has a strong capacity building component at the local level where community members will learn new agricultural practices like the development of permaculture gardens, nursery management and plant propagation on site.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Introducing sustainable livelihoods will be addressed in the project through introducing sustainable practices and enhancing current livelihood opportunities.
Gender Focus
Gender is an integral part of this project as both men and women are present in the organisation's board. The project activities is focused on women, where 27 women will be involved in the project activities.
Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
The project operates in the communal lands under the Kgoshi (Chief) M.P. Mathebe of the Pedi people.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
The Department of Land Affairs and Agriculture and Mpumalanga Parks Board will assist the CBO in implementing a education and training pack for soil conservation and land degradation.
