Eliminating the POPs contamination of the environment by assessing their effect on different sectors in Gaza (PAL/04/52)


Project Details & Results
It's a field study project on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPS) contamination in these groups the agricultural pesticides, industrial chemicals and waste incineration. The assessment will be conducted in close cooperation with the Palestinian Environment Quality Authority.
The project will facilitate the collection and identification of solid technical base of information to facilitate the prepation of the National Implementaion Plan(NIP) to eliminate the adverse impact of POPs in the above groups and prevent their use where possible. Such plan will help EQA to meet the obligations of the Stockholm Convention on elimination of POPs.

Capacity building for 120 persons from different stakeholders by conducting 3 workshops “24-30 training hours” on Stockholm Convention and other International conventions regarding the POPs and it’s harmful impact to the health and Environment, how to measure the POPs concentration and the sources of POPs and how it’s transfer to the environment.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Raising public awareness on POPS pollution and the adverse effects on human health and environment through organizing three workshops aiming at introducing the project and its objectives, involving decision makers from the Environmental Quality Authority, Energy Authority, municipalities and other relevant ministries, organizing evaluation workshop to disseminate the information collected throughout the study and preparing and distributing public awareness materials such as 3000 stickers, 1000 booklets, 3000 brochures and 500 CDs advocating the types and the effect of POPs on human heath and environment.

Project Results
Environmental Benefits: producing a case study on the Assessment of POPs in Gaza Strip and produced a technical report to be used as a ground base for the National Implementing Plan. The technical report includes POPs categories and POPS Quantity (calculation and Estimation), Hot spots in Gaza Strip and registered cases of pollution and toxicity and legislation concerning POPs.
Capacity Building: Capacity building for 120 persons from different stakeholders by conducting 3 workshops “24-30 training hours” on Stockholm Convention and other International conventions regarding the POPs and it’s harmful impact to the health and Environment, how to measure the POPs concentration and the sources of POPs and how it’s transfer to the environment.
Public Awareness: raising public awareness through distributing 1000copy of posters, 5000 copy of stickers, 1000 copy of brochures and producing a training material on the POPs problem, its resources and its impact on the health and environment.
Policy influence: This project succeeded to attract the attention of the governmental institutions on the importance of tackling the POPs problems into consideration in addition to that it’s strengthen the relation and create the discussion between the governmental and non governmental institutions on this issue and other environmental issues.
