Project Details & Results

The village of Apai is located on the tiny island of Manono-tai on the coast, and much of the village livelihood comes from its marine resources (through fishing and collecting crustaceans), however the over consumption has resulted in the deterioration of the inshore marine resources. Thus corals have been severely damaged and it has contributed to the decline in fishes, marine organisms and so forth. The village is concerned with the depletion in its marine resources and is willing to rehabilitate its marine resources through the planting of corals or coral gardening.

Objective: planning grant will help the community prepare a full grant proposal under the SGP, with technical support from partners that the community will solicit such as government

Capacity - Building Component
demonstration training conducted by Fisheries on Coral Gardening to mark out boundaries of the inshore area for conservation in-house workshop on assessing needs and preparation of the full project proposal

Project Results
Project achieved the following;

- demonstration training for the community on coral gardening conducted by Fisheries Division
- full-project proposal prepared and submitted to GEF SGP Secretariat
- community awareness on the importance of marine conservation in sustaining their subsistence livelihood.

Update as at Dec 2011:
The contact number in the project is no longer valid. At present the team is trying to locate other members involved in the project to verify the amount approved for the project in 2005.

The MOA cannot be located and there is no soft copy detected either.
NSC list from 2005 cannot be located.

Data is currenlty being collected from Fisheries in relation to an assessment of the coral gardening project in the village of Apai, Manono Tai.
