Project Details & Results

The Women's Committee of Sapunaoa Village is trying to promote the importance of managing the environment because of the lack of awareness and understanding about sustainable natural resource management. This will be the first environment project implemented in the village of Sapunaoa, and its also look at a way of utilizing a large number of unemployed young women of the village to do organic garden for the village. The project will promote organic farming through trainings of women about the process of natural vegetables growth without pesticide uses and fertilizers. Objective: to provide an opportunity for young women of Sapunaoa Village become active participants caring for the environment, through development of an organic farming project.

Notable Community Participation
Village Council consent and support Women's Committee project untitled men helped women with heavy labour work majority of women in the village were involved

Capacity - Building Component
Workshop conducted for the women's group by Crops Division (Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries) and representative from SGP Office on report writing. Demonstration plot in planting vegetables and assessing soil conducted

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
First harvest, women sold vegetables and earned $600.00 tala (230.00 USD) and this was used to buy more seedlings and remaining left over were banked in the women's account.

Gender Focus
Women mainly involved, there was assistance from untitled men on putting up a fence to protect vegetables

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
Women's group involved and majority of people are indigenous.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Promoted awareness on proper land management and this helped women understand the importance of sustainable land use.

Project Results
Project outcome: This is the first project that has brought together all women in the village to work in developing a vegetable garden free of pesticides Women have gained skills on vegetable gardening, by using tools and preparing crops for planting Women are now willing to plant their own family gardens and the women's group will monitor the progress, this step will continue by the women's group on their own without assistance. The aim is to try out what they have learnt from the demonstration plot.
