Introducing Water Saving Techniques Using the Solar Energy in an Environmental Garden in Dummar (SYR/OP3/05/05)

Project Details & Results

Damascus Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (DAWSSA) in collaboration with Damascus Friends Association, an NGO based in Damascus, initiated a pilot project related to advocating the use of drought resistant plants and water saving techniques that utilize solar energy in Damascus' home gardens and parks. Project activities will include establishing an environmental garden in Dummar. The environmental garden will be annexed to Dummar Water Billing Center where visitors will have the opportunity to get acquainted with water saving techniques and drought resistant plants thought demonstration sites in the garden.

Notable Community Participation
Participants include Dummar residents, DAWSSA staff, private companies (providing water saving equipment to be exhibited), and members of DFA.
Direct beneficiaries include Dummar residents, school children who will visit the site and active NGOs in Dummar that will be trained.

Capacity - Building Component
The project aims at building capacities of beneficiaries in the following areas:
- Introduce principles of water rationalization in the national water management strategies and policies, particularly in residential areas.
- Introduce new water saving irrigation technologies, drought resistant plants, use of renewable energy in irrigation and, garden designs that will raise the public and decision-makers awareness to the urgency and necessity of rationalizing water use in a creative manner.
-Train a group of active NGOs in Dummar residential area and DAWSSA on spreading the culture of rationalizing water consumption, communicating with the inhabitants and familiarize the public with the concept of the water demand management.
- the project would raise the awareness among school students, inhabitants and interested groups concerning methods of rationalizing water use on the family level, and how to manage water efficiently.

Policy Impact
As a result to the project activities:
-The Water Saving Bureau at the Ministry of Housing and Construction is mobilized,
-Checking on water saving techniques installed in constructions becomes a prerequisite for licensing by engineers syndicates,
- Parks Department in Damascus adapts drought resistant plants and gardens' design.
