Revitalization of the yellow water lily (Nuohar luteum) habitat in Lake Ohrid area (MKD/OP3/02/06/07)

Project Details & Results

The project is designed to revitalize the habitat of the Yellow water lily (one of the endangered species of Lake Ohrid), by replanting it and by promoting within the local population its value.
Yellow water lily is one of the endangered species of Lake Ohrid which disappeared from many localities in Lake Ohrid and is limited in one part (in the north-west coastline of the Lake) which is under big anthropogenic impact as well. Reduction of the yellow water lily surfaces is a result of intensified drying the lake with intention of increasing the private land. The project aim is to (1) replant in the area of Mazija in the north-east part of the Lake near town of Ohrid where it was abundantly present until late sixties and to (2) increase the public awareness (the local inhabitants of the village of Kalista) on importance of protecting the plant specie yellow water lily by: organizing of public tribunes and publishing of printed materials (postcards, leaflets).

Project Results
- Specimens of yellow water lily were transferred from the location Kalista to location Mazija where they were successfully potted, propagated and further spread,
- The location Mazija was horticultural designed with plants and grass, Information board, consisted general information of the yellow water lily was prepared and placed, plastic fence was set up in order to protect the area with newly planted yellow water lilies, path was build, benches and litter bins were placed,
- Two public events were organised (One presentation of the project activities and results and one round table on biodiversity and significance of the yellow water lily), with participation of general public, representatives of the local municipality Ohrid, experts from the Hydro biological Institute Ohrid, several NGOs, local and national media (TV, radio, newspaper), etc.,
- Leaflet on project results was prepared and printed, hats, t-shirts, pens, calendars with project logo consisted of symbol of yellow water lily were prepared, printed and distributed to interested citizens and pupils,
- Presentations to pupils at local primary schools.
