Project Details & Results

One of the most significant issues of the contemporary living is the absolute domination of the fossil oil as a source of energy. The combustion of the fossil fuels causes emission of GHG causing climate changes. Due to the fact that the sources of the fossil fuels are limited while the demand for it is increasing, the price of the oil shows a continuously growing trend, causing major disturbances and turbulence in the economies of both developed and developing countries. The project aim to contribute to reduction of the green house gasses emission on the local level by starting the sustainable pilot-production of bio-diesel [organized collection of waste vegetable oil (two fast food producing companies in the capital Skopje are willing to donate their waste vegetable oil, installation of biodisel reactor, production of bio diesel fuels from waste vegetable oil and production of rape seed oil, raising public awareness on importance for fast food owners on adequate dislocation od waste vegetable oil and importance of its re-using/recycling, providing biodisel to farmers]. The leader NGO Star/Zvezda will cooperate with association of women farmers “Agro-Vinka” who will plant the ‘rape seed’ to produce straight vegetable oil that will be processed in the same biodisel reactor into biodisel (this biodisel can not be sold on the market in Macedonia yet, but can be used to plant more rape seed, to involve more women farmers and to produce other fruits/ vegetables/ cereals/ etc). As the project impact are envisioned to be: reduction of the GHG emissions leading to abatement of Climate Change, Pilot and demonstration project that waste vegetable oil and straight vegetable oil can be used for production of biodisel (cheaper, biodegradable, renewable resource of energy and environmentally friendly when compared to the fossil diesel), improvement of the economic conditions of several members of the local population and finally the possibilities for replication and upscaling on a regional level promoted and understood.

Project Results
Project achievements

- Open and instate installation for biodiesel production in Makedonska Kamenica with capacity of 3000 liters/ 24 hours crude biodiesel;
- 14000 liters biodiesel in the period of 14 months produced, hence reduced emission of 37660 kg CO2.
Planted 27 ha area agricultural land with oil rape seeds to be used as a bases for production of biodiesel;
- Collected 15000 liter waste vegetable oil and signed long term agreements with McDonalds and Student Dormitory for continuing collection;
- Media promotion for the grand opening of the installation for biodiesel with participants of numerous local and national printed and electronic TV, radios and newspapers as well as nation wide distribution of project leaflet through national newspaper Dnevnik (29/11/2007).
- WEB promotion of the project activities on www.biodi?sel.com.mk
- Long term solution for location for biodiesel installation by obtaining free of charge barracks, property of EVN Makedonija
- This project was initiated first organized biodiesel production in Macedonia. At the same time it is made by organization of special needs and hence promote their possibilities, capacities and their increasing social inclusion.
