2012 - Sustainable small scale agricultural business in Suriname
Foundation d'ONS and HAK is, with support from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation (ELI) in the Netherlands, have awarded, for the first time in Suriname, the most sustainable small scale agricultural business in Suriname. Sustainable farming is necessary to ensure food safety, healthy agricultural products and good health. There are already a number of companies in Suriname that undertake sustainable agriculture. The Foundation d’ONS would like to stimulate this process by awarding three business with a prize. The winner is Mr. Andre Pita from Petondro (Moengo), and the two runner ups are Marlene Tima and Robert Kriomtani. Marlene Tima and Robert Kriomtani are both farmers that have participated in the Sustainable Agricultural project facilitated by the Caribbean Insitute (SUR/SGP/OP4/CORE/2010/03), and supported by GEF SGP (2010 – 2012). They have received the training and guidance during this project to realize the transition from conventional agricultural practices –use of pesticides – to a more safe practice, without the use of pesticides.
