Policy Impact

Prof. Antonio Borghese, General Secretary of International Buffalo federation and Coordinator of FAO Buffalo initiative visited the project site and held meeting with relevant representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Institute for animal husbandry, stressing the urgent need to protect the Macedonian buffalo as species and its gene pool;
Strategy for protection with Action plan was developed and awaiting the adoption by the local Municipality as a strategic document;

Project Results

- Initiated protection of the water buffalos and doubled the number of population;
- Organized 10 thematic workshops focusing on representatives from 7 families where participants were trained to handed and manufacture of the buffalo dairy products;
- Two informative sighs with information on buffalos were prepared and placed in village Debreste; two public paths toward the buffalo cites for interested visitors were marked;

Follow up
Inspired by the project activities, students from the secondary school in Prilep, joined Biosfera and organised public awareness and fundraising activities in the school and city of Prilep. The aim of the accompanied activities were “to use local resources and to find solution to the local extinction of water buffalo by re-starting niche industry supporting women and poorer farmers and at the same time giving hope to the long term security to these buffalos”. Their initiative was awarded with the 2nd Prize— winner (US$ 8.000) in the 2008 Volvo Adventure Environment Competition.
