Bastau (renovation)
The project territory (PT) – Zhanatilek village is located at the southern foot of the western slopes of the ridge ofTarbagatay Basin of Hegin-su river.The district belongs to the foothill and steppe and desert-steppe zone. The main cause of degradation of pastures around the village Zhanatilek is a non-technology use of pastures. Desertification and land degradation in condition of climate aridization and complete violation of existing technologies grazing, loss of traditional knowledge on seasonal use of pastures and lack of funds for the revival of rational methods of gentle pasture rotation. Today, the main problem of rural communities is the expansion of livestock forage - limited and degradation of pastures, a small area of grassland, the absence of sown area of forage crops.

Project aim:
Decrease pastures degradation through creation of forage reserve for animal industries and rehabilitates traditional methods of the outrun cattle grazing, and also to train LC members in rational pastures use

Project tasks:
- Establishment of cattle forage base for sparing usage of pasture lands of local communities
- Restoration of technologies of distant (seasonal) pastures use on PT
- Training of pasture use management for LC members and promotion of the achievements of the project

Project results:
- Restored water piping network (canal - 7 km).
- On 80 ha of arable land sown the lucerne and alfalfa seed, for the hay and further increase in feed production on their own land to members of LC
- Restored the infrastructure of winter pastures Chonabay (8987 hectares): shepherds house, wells, shed and pens, located at a distance of 35-40 km from the village
- Developed the scheme of distant grazing. The shepherds are trained management practices of grazing land.
- Formed a flock of 600-700 heads and organized grazing on distant pastures
- Reduced load on aul pastures, localized degradation, increased productivity and forage quality, increased output of livestock products and income members of LC
- Increased productivity of livestock and improving the socio-economic indicators of the LC members
- Prepared the methodological recommendation for
rational pasture use management on foothill and steppe and desert-steppe zones of the republic in Kazakh and Russian languages
- Members of the LC have the notion of a clear dependence: state of pastures - quality and quantity of feed - the level the community livehood

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
Capacity building of locals consists in giving knowledge on rational pasture managment and principles of sustainable development. Both theoretical (seminars, discussions, literature) knowledge and practical skills (common works under experts consultations, fields days, trainings) were given to the locals. The shepherds are also trained on management practices of grazing land.
