Protection of autochthonous species – domestic buffalo
Protection of autochthonous species – domestic buffalo
Buffalo rearing has a long tradition in the R. of Macedonia. Previously, buffalo number in 50th and 60th from last sentury was around 30.000 heads, but now in our state their number has decreased to only 60-70 heads (2011). Therefore, the general aim of the project is to protect the domestic buffalo from disappearing, and second, to increase its capacity and to spread in the region.
?here are very desirable conditions in our state for water buffalo rearing:
- The environmental and ecological factors are very desirable for buffalo breeding,
- There are relatively large agricultural land aimed for grazing and crop production,
- Buffaloes are very good accommodated and adapted to our climate conditions,
- There are enough labor force which is cheap comparing with the same in EU or in some other neighbored countries,
- We have a tradition in producing a several milk products from buffalo milk in our country.
Our main goal is to protect this species – a domestic water buffalo from disappearing and also make sustainable development business for our membership and for population in local community
