Demonstration of measures on decrease of rare raptors death on power lines through creation of model site of power lines with bird protection equipment and capacity building of government on prevention of raptors death on power lines
Project aim:
Decrease the load on rare raptors biodiversity by creation of model site of power lines with bird protection equipment and capacity building of government on prevention of raptors death on power lines in Kazakhstan

Project tasks:
- Creation of model site of power lines with bird protection equipment in Karaganda area for the efficiency demonstration of the bird protection equipment in conditions of Central Kazakhstan and increasing potential of other power lines owners by experience replication
- Capacity building of interested governmental authorities, power companies in implementing activities on prevention of raptors death on power lines and perfection of regulatory and legal framework in environmental protection

Project results:
- Conducted research of bird protection equipment market
- Drawn plan on creation of model site with administration of Power Company
- Model site chosen with participation of local power company
- Conducted efficiency assessment of bird protection equipment on model site
- Report on results of bird protection equipment use disseminated among power companies of Kazakhstan
- Decreased load on rare raptor biodiversity on the project site, particularly on such species as Aquila heliaca, Falcon cherrug, Aquila clanga, Aquila nipalensis, Circaetus gallicus, Aquila chrysaetos
- Analyzed international experience helped in perfection of regulatory and legal framework
- Obtained public proposals for the draft of legal act
- Developed and gave to the authorized state body the draft of the legal act that include requirements on prevention of raptors death on power lines
- Developed recommendations on prevention of raptors death on power lines and included in National Strategy and Action plan on conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity till 2020 year
- Recommendations on assessment of power lines impact on birds for procedures of environmental impact assessment when building the new power lines developed and gave to authorized state body
- Held the round table ‘Implementing measures for prevention raptors’ death on power lines’ with participation of all interested parties

All informational materials, developed under the project, including report with recommendations and description of gained experience, disseminated among all interested parties in the form of special brochures, printed and electronic issues and published in the internet resources. Experience shared with international colleagues.
Capacity - Building Component
Capacity building of interested governmental authorities, power companies in implementing activities on prevention of raptors death on power lines and perfection of regulatory and legal framework in environmental protection was one of the projects tasks, that was achieved by holding different meetings (including round tables), developing recommendations and creation of a legal act.
