Reduction of CO2 emission throughout substitution of fossil fuel with biomass – wood waste in the Polog region
Reduction of CO2 emission throughout substitution of fossil fuel with biomass – wood waste in the Polog region
The project aims are to create conditions for reducing climate change in rural municipalities Poloski region (Brvenica) by reducing emissions of CO2, as a local contribution to the global common goal - reduced impact of climate change.
Specific objectives:
Target 1: To reduce oil consumption by replacing a boiler that runs on fossil fuel with boiler that runs on wood biomass and improvement energy efficiency at the local level ;
Target 2: Strengthening the capacity of municipal governments for implementation of programs for energy efficiency;
Target 3: Raising awareness among people about climate change, energy savings and the advantage of using renewable energy sources, through educational workshops and printed materials;
Target 4: Strengthening of civil activism in the municipality and involvement of local people in the initiation and formation of the Civil Association in municipality Brvenica .
Measurable impact that we expect to achieve with this project is less consumption of fossil fuels - oil reduction of emission of CO2 in the air which is important in terms of dealing with climate change.
Lesser consumption through so-called boiler that runs on wood biomass and long lifetime of the boilers show that this system is very cost-effective for a long-term and to result in significantly lower costs for municipal governments.
The possibility of this project as replication, eventually possible positive results enable utilization of project activities in other municipalities in Macedonia is a huge bearing in mind that the same problems occur in almost all municipalities, and more expensive energy require a broader commitment to improve energy efficiency a priority of local governments in the country .
Initiation and formation of the Civil Association in municipality Brvenica will give to the local people opportunity to be involved and to be active citizens and to contribute to the improvement and protection of the environment.
The environmental aspect of the project is quite clearly expressed because the consumption of oil will be reduced, and as a fuel creates huge problems with their emissions of CO2. It is generally known that CO2 is the cause of the climate change problem which is facing all humanity.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
Build a partnership between the local NGOs and the municipality, as well as raising awareness among the local population about the benefits and necessity for using wood biomass instead of fossil fuel by organizing three workshops where 45 citizens were presented with project activities and expected results. During the project duration 4 new NGOs were formed: Brvenica and Zlatna detelina from Brvenica, Besa and Mesazi from Celopek.
Project sustainability
By installing a pellet heater, it is estimated that 22.000 kg pellets (260.000 kwh; 1kg = 5kwh) will be used, with 0 tons of CO2 emission and with annual cost of 264 000 MKD. Forecasted annual savings is app. 400.000 MKD (7000 US$). The Local Municipality of Brvenica intend to use the generated savings for future local environmental projects.
