Decentralized waste recycling and management by the association of waste-pickers in the city of Mumbai
Stree Mukti Sanghatana (SMS) is working in the field of Solid Waste Management in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and kaliyan –Dombavili for last 13 years. SMS has developed several projects and later on handed over them to cooperative of waste pickers (initiated by SMS). One of its projects in Kalayan Dombivili Municipal Cooperation is already displayed on UNDP website in Best Practice section. Over the years SMS has developed training manuals for waste pickers in composting, life skill development and leadership training and has been recognized as training Institute for waste pickers by Municipal cooperation of Greater Mumbai. SMS is license holder of the technology developed by Bhabha atomic Research Center for Nisarga run Biogas plant. SMS has developed c.d.s for public awareness on Solid Waste Management. One of its c.d.s on biogas has received Bronze award at National Science Film Festival in Calcutta held in January 2013.
Project Title: -“Decentralized waste management with the association of waste-pickers”. The basic idea of the project is to demonstrate in large examples the viability and the feasibility of decentralized waste-management solutions. While the wet waste will get composted in composting and vermin-composting units, the dry waste will be sent over to recycler's. The project will also generate good employment opportunities for the waste-pickers.
Project Goal: - The project of SMS aims at addressing the problems of waste-pickers engaged in ‘menial’ tasks of ‘cleaning waste’ and also the problem of SWM (Solid Waste Management) engulfing current urban existence. Their vision for SWM and climate change is Decentralized, Low Cost, Energy Efficient, Labour Friendly, High resource recovery, Environmentally sound and Sustainable.
Project Objectives: -
• To demonstrate the idea of Zero-waste in college campuses, schools and housing societies.
• Set up decentralized waste handing units for the College campuses, schools and housing societies.
• Process the Biodegradable waste by setting up Composting and vermin-composting units and send the non-Biodegradable waste to recycling units while only 5-10% of the waste goes to the dumping grounds.
• Generate formal employment for the local waste-pickers in the projects, by training them and getting them involved in the operation and maintenance of the compositing and vermin-composting units.
• Increase environmental awareness among the students and residents depending on where the project is targeted to.
Project Activities:-
• CD making and other communication material preparation.
• Initiate the civil, operational and management team.
• Identifying colleges, schools and housing societies of the target size and target locations in the city.
• Start Pitching and putting up proposals to the prospective clients.
• Identifying and training of the workers to be involved.
• Impact measurement and documentation.

600 women waste pickers will be involved in managing the organic waste collection for composting and operate small-scale biogas plants. People in the targeted institutes and housing societies will be encouraged to do the segregation at source. Production of energy can be used for cooking, heating or electricity generation. Providing clean fuels for women as they were using fire woods for cooking which were causing health hazards.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
A civil, operational and management team will be formed for handing and supervising the project. Environmental Conferences will be conducted. Demonstration will be done to make aware the college campus, schools and housing societies aware on Zero waste.
