Establishing local tools in Municipality of Zelenikovo to become a municipality without waste, through selecting, collecting and recycling of PET plastic waste from households
The main objective of the project is the reduction of the quantities of POPs through sustainable management of the solid, plastic PET waste from the households. The specific goals of the project are given as follows:

1. Education of the population about the harmfulness of waste plastic, and the effects of PoPs on the human health, and the composition of soil, air, and water.
2. Motivation of the population for primary selection and collection of PET packaging in the households and schools.
3. Technical support for the Public Cleaning Enterprise Zelenikovo (PCEZ) for efficient implementation of the collection, processing and resell as secondary raw material of PET plastic, as an opportunity for generating additional economic interest for the community.
In other words, by implementing this project:
• A full-scale system for waste management will be established in the municipality of Zelenikovo, thus enabling the municipality to become a zero level waste municipality, through the fostering of the cooperation between ORT, the local authorities, the schools, the PCCZ and the businesses that operate in the community for establishing practices for zero waste levels. All the involved will gain a sense for ownership in the community, thus gaining motivation for doing other community-beneficial activities. Furthermore, the active involvement of the local population in the project activities will enable the people to change their lives, and to secure the sustainability of their environment.
• Socialization of the population will be stimulated, as the level of self-organizing of the people belonging to different economic, social and age groups will be increased. In addition, the inclusion of 5% of the people belonging to different ethnic communities will furthermore increase their sense for contribution, thus motivating them for greater personal involvement.
• The project opens up new employment opportunities, and enables financial strengthening of the organizations that will be active participants in the project. A final and important outcome of the project is the improved capacity for functioning of the PCCZ. The company will be technically able, and will have increased and improved knowledge for independent managing of the municipality waste in the future.
• The project also affects the community through a range of group activities. The collection of waste in one dedicated place decreases the possibilities for creating public mess and filth, and the occurrence of new wild landfills. All this contributes to improved living standards for the population in general. In addition, the setting up and the functioning of the system for selection, collection, processing and resell of the waste PET plastic and paper creates opportunities for new jobs and financial strengthening of the PCCZ, which also means more donations for the community, the schools and ORT.

The Project Impact is reflected in motivating socialization and self-coordination among staff, parents and pupils in primary schools, through a series of group activities.

The collection of some of the waste in one place reduces the amount of mess and dirt on public spaces, which in turn contributes towards improved living standards. With the establishment and functioning of the system for selecting, collecting, processing and sale of waste PET packages, the project opens possibilities for new jobs and financial benefits in schools and ORT.

The project involves the local population, has measurable effects with practical benefits for the environment, builds partnerships, result in starting self-sufficiency, contributes to the improvement of socio-economic situation in the schools, encourages the participation of children and women, and with development component does build educational capacities. Project is in the priority areas of GEF SGP (OP14- Persistent Organic Pollutants- POPs) and creates conditions for investment in schools and CSO for regional development. The project encourages environmentally friendly businesses in the local communities of the municipality and informs the public about problems and achievements.
