Sustainable Environmental Resource Management and Livelihood Technology and Systems Demonstration/Learning Centre for Rural Women in the Akuapem North District
The project addresses problems in climate change and biodiversity conservation and land degradation and desertification control focal area of the Global Environment Facility. The project area is within the dry semi arid zone. The project seeks to promote sustainable management and utilization of savannah resources for wealth creation and improvement of the health of the people. The main project activities are

1. Awareness and capacity of women for sustainable environmental resource management in Akuapem North developed. The expected activities to achieve this outcome are
a) Hold quarterly environmental durbars with Chiefs, Queen mothers and opinion leader?s environmental issues.
b) Form, train and equip Supportive Women Organization in 10 rural communities for environmental management and livelihood support activities.
c) Develop and promote the distribution of environmental educational materials.
d) Institute weekly environmental awareness and education programme on local FM station.
e) Revise and enact community laws on environmental management.
f) Promote public awareness on energy conservation practices
g) Train and equip 200 commercial woodfuel users and households in the construction and use of improved fuel wood stoves.
h) Train 20 women as artisans to promote the construction of improved woodfuel stoves in the Akwapim North District.
i) Train and support members of Supportive Women Organization in wildfire prevention and management.

2. Sarforo Women?s Centre developed as a technology and systems demonstration/learning Centre. The expected activities of this outcome are:
a) Formulate a participatory business plan to guide the Sarforo women centre as a resource management demonstration and learning centre.
b) Upgrade the skills of the Instructors and Resource person in ecosystem conservation and sustainable livelihood systems.
c) Link the centre to MOFA and FSD district office to provide technical backstopping to the instructors.
d) Supply adult learning materials for the centre
e) Provide solar lighting and drying systems to encourage night adult literary classes for the effective functioning of the centre.
f) Promote the adoption of efficient energy conservation practices in Akwapim North District
g) Set up technology and demonstration systems at the Learning Centre for improved woodfuel stoves and ecosystem conservation and sustainable livelihood activities.

3. Livelihood support and sustainable management of natural resource in 10 rural communities promoted and sustained. The expected activities are:
a) Initiate periodic adult literacy training programmes for women in sustainable ecosystem and livelihood activities
b) Assist individual families to establish 50 ha woodlots for supply of firewood.
c) Assist women to adopt ecosystem conservation and sustainable livelihood activities which incorporate tree planting with wildlife rearing, medicinal and fruit tree cultivation, snail farming, fish farming and bee-keeping.
d) Assist women vegetable farmers to practice organic farming
e) Support women in the processing and marketing of soya-gari
f) 20 breeder rabbit was purchase for rearing and they have increase to 110 in number
g) about 6 youth have acquired the skill of wood curving and have produced varous curving to be marketed.
h) 3 women are engaged in the tie and die business as eight youth are in the business of processing fruit juice.

i) Train women woodfuel producers from 10 communities in improved woodfuel production
