Ghana had over 10 million Ha of forest cover at the beginning of the 20th century which dwindled to about 1.2 million Ha at the close of that century. The main threats to forests are unsustainable slash and burn agriculture or shifting cultivation ( ... )
od and cash crop production, excessive logging, mining and bushfires. The threats are severest on off-reserve forests where forest cover is disappearing at an alarming rate.
This project is located in the Moist Evergreen Forest zone of Western Region of Ghana and has the objective of assessing the abundance and distribution of Thaumatococcus danielli (a non-sugar natural sweetner) and other Non

Afram Plains District falls within the Dry Semi-Deciduous Forest Zone of Ghana. It is part of the transition zone between the forest and the guinea savanna zones and so is very diverse, having species that occur in both zones. However, this area is ( ... )
oosing its forest cover and biodiversity because of large scale crop farming, commercial production of charcoal and commercial animal husbandry of the nomadic type that fuels extensive bush burning for grass production.
The project is working closely with the Local Government (District Assembly), Traditional Authorities and landowners, the commercial charcoal producers and other stakeholders to

The Kpeshie Lagoon is situated at La, a peri-urban township just outside Accra. The lagoon is currently heavily silted and polluted. However, in the past it served as a major fishing ground for the local fishermen. The desilting of the lagoon is ( ... )
the scope of GEF/SGP as shown by our experience with a smaller lagoon – the Sango Lagoon (GHA/009).
The CBO plans to gather baseline data that will enhance their chances of scaling up and applying for GEF/MSP

The city of Accra, like most medium to large human settlements in Ghana, have a big problem with improper disposal of solid waste, particularly plastic waste. The seemingly unmanageable plastic litter, apart from being an eyesore, gets washed into ( ... )
and chokes the latter leading to flooding of parts of Accra. Since the waste does not burn readily, it stays as litter in the drains until it is finally washed into the sea. In the sea, the plastic pose a danger to marine organisms, like sea turtles who mistaken them for jellyfish and feed on them. On land, the plastics are also consumed by domestic animals who get choked on them.

The Kassena Nankana District of the Upper East Region of Ghana is a vastly deforested region and currently many families depend on dry cow dung, guinea corn, millet and other crop residue as their source of energy for domestic cooking. Virtually ( ... )
family has livestock, whose waste can be used for producing biogas. The lessons learned from other GEF/SGP project using the brick-lined fixed dome biogas digester showed that the design was too expensive for rural families. The project will be trying out cheaper designs. Unfortunately the large numbers of livestock, which are allowed to graze freely, are the reasons for the failures of most

The Common Hippopotamus, Hippopotamus amphibius – one of Africa’s large mammals – is globally endangered, according to IUCN. It occurs exclusively in Africa, south of the sahara in a patchy distribution throughout its range. Even though in the ( ... )
was believed to be widely distributed in Ghana, it is now mostly restricted to portions of the Black Volta River, particularly within and just outside the Bui National Park. There are also small populations along this river stretching up to Burkina Faso and possibly in the Kulpawn River. All populations outside the National Park suffer a risk of human predation.

Ghana is very concerned about the rate of loss of the country’s tropical forests, particularly the off-reserve forests. Whereas at the beginning of the 20th Century, the country had over 10 million Ha of forest cover, this had reduced to about 1.2 ( ... )
Ha at the close of the 20th Century. The 1.2 million Ha of forests are also degraded in places and patchy because extensive small scale subsistence farming leading to serious habitat fragmentation. The Gushiegu-Karaga District of the Northern Region of Ghana is of guinea savannah vegetation and suffers severe bushfires that affect biodiversity in the protected areas of the district. The NGO was piloting the reduction of bushfires by addressing ( ... )
the major problems/activities that lead to communities starting the fires. The identified problems are: (i) extensive burning of dry grass and foliage at the onset of the dry season to force early sprouting of fresh green foliage for livestock. (The underlying assumption is that ruminants will not eat dry foliage); (ii) hunting of wild honey using fire in the dry season that accidentally lead to
