Community Efforts in Creating capacities in the Disability Leadership Group (DLG) for a pollution free Ladakh through recycling
Namgyal Institute for People with Disabilities had earlier implemented a SGP project on management of urban solid waste in Leh with people with differential abilities. The present project is an up-scaled one that has been sanctioned based on the success of the earlier model. The goal of the project is to develop ways for reduction and management of urban waste in Leh, while providing sustainable livelihoods for the people with differential abilities. The project will reduce the incidence of dumping and burning of waste thus reducing release of methane and GHG. The segregated wastes with provide raw material for hand made Ladhaki handicrafts, which will be used to set up profitable enterprise for income generation.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Campaigns will be undertaken for generating awareness amongst the public on issues related to waste, especially with the army, the tourists and the Municipality.
Policy Impact
The NGO has established links with the government and their program has wide acceptance in local government. They are in the process of working out a collaboration with the government and other NGOs on a sustainable garbage managemnet programme. The NGO seeks to make this an important agenda of the tourism industry, so that their activities are geared towards garbage reduction. The NGO will initiate take back policies with manufacturers producing non-degradable and harmful consumer goods like tetra-packs. The project, if successful, will help determine future policies of the government and will also increase the demands of stakeholders for a sustainable garbage management programme.
