Environmental Security and Women's Empowerment

The project carries out tasks related to nursery site selection and preparation; supplying the necessary inputs and tools for the nursery; water pump & reservoir provision; seedling production (fruit & other trees); identification of forestation sites; free seedling distribution on Tree Day; plantation/forestation; preparing demonstration site for vegetable production; organising training on vegetable growing; providing the inputs needed for vegetable production for women; formation and facilitation of Self Help Groups (SHGs); PRA and community mapping to target poor women to involve in SHGs; training of SHG members on basic concepts of SHG, saving & loan management, civic & women?s right.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

Building of local government line offices and officials and community capacity with respect to environmental interventions, building partnership and community-based organizations in taking ownership of the project, with SWDA taking a consultative and monitoring role throughout. This will be done through the involvement of Cooperative Office staff in formation and support of local Cooperatives; participation of DAs in community training programs, women?s participation in M&E and that of government staff in monitoring project implementation.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Improving the livelihood of the community through introduction of diversified farming practice and appropriate technology, helping vulnerable people realize their potential and organizing them as groups and introducing the concept of institution building so that they gain a new sense of identity and purpose, and formation of cooperatives to build momentum towards self-sufficiency and a more resilient civil society.

Policy Impact

The NGO will try to formulate gender policy for the Cooperatives to be formed in consistence with that of the policy of local government body.

The community participates towards project implementation trough labor contribution amounting to US$ 7,126.44

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

This project is aimed at raising awareness and interest on environmental protection and familiarization with diversified sustainable farming practices and appropriate technology, training to enable them utilise their environment in a sustainable manner. Potential is also observed for ecological regeneration through greater awareness and the protection of the environment.

Gender Focus

Through this project, the NGO gives paramount improtance on the formation of Self Help Groups (SHGs) to target women in the poorest of conditions, financially and socially, in order to address all aspects of their socio-economic empowerment.

Project Results

? Baseline Survey conducted.

? A Cooperative was established having 60 women members.

? Trainings were given to the cooperative members on vegetable production, tree nursery, mud brick making, fuel saving stove production, basic concepts of Self Help Group (SHG) Approach, savings and records keeping.

? Nursery site with 3 ha of land was secured. Tree and fruit seedlings were planted & distributed

? Construction of mini-store, office, toilet and guard houses was made

? Model house and a shelter were constructed from mud brick to increase the community?s awareness.

? Irrigation: The nearby river was diverted to serve the targeted group & other community members.
