Saving Ujung Kulon National Park area from the threat of agricultural expansion through Agricultural Intensification Program.
GOAL
In 2014, forest clearing activity for new agricultural and buffalo-grazing area in Cibadak village is decreased by 50%, so that the Java rhino habitat area and population can be maintained.
OBJECTIVES
Objective 1 : The establishment of farmers forum and livestock owners (buffaloes) of Cibadak village that has a commitment to halt the expansion of rice fields and wild grazing in the area of Ujung Kulon National Park (NP) and all the related agencies have signed MOU of agricultural intensification program
Indicators : 1. Farmers and 200 buffalo owners who did encroachment and wild grazing in Ujung Kulon NP realize the importance of the area conservation.
2. Collection of secondary data: Pandeglang in Figures 2012 and Statistics of Cimanggu District in 2012, statistics of Ujung Kulon NP service 2012.
3. Collection of data on the number of encroaching farmers, the field area (paddy), the number of buffaloes, buffaloes owners and the number of wild grazing area outlined in the map.
4. The signing of MoU and the formulation of action plan for organic farming intensification program between Pokja AKBJ, Balai Ujung Kulon NP, Animal Husbandry and Animal Health (Disnakkeswan) Agency and Agricultural Agency, Pandeglang Regency.
Activities : 1. Meetings:
a. In January 2013, meeting with the Head of Agency and staff of husbandry agencies, agricultural agencies and Balai Ujung Kulon NP, at Ujung Kulon NP?s office. In order to coordinate and develop an understanding about the handling of wild grazing and encroaching farmers in the area of Ujung Kulon NP.
b. In February 2013, a meeting with the village officials of Cibadak village (Village Head and Village Consultative Board/BPD), Resort officers of Cibadak Ujung Kulon NP, encroaching farmers/peasants in the area of Ujung Kulon NP and buffalo owners.
2. Field Survey:
a. In March 2013, to identify and update data on the number of encroaching farmers, location of encroachments, number of buffalo owners and wild shepherds in the area of Ujung Kulon NP by engaging officials from Ujung Kulon NP Cibadak resort and Cibadak village officials.
b. In April 2013, to conduct mapping of land encroachment (paddy field) area and the location of wild grazing in Cibadak Resort area, together with a mapping team of Balai Ujung Kulon NP.
c. In May 2013, a meeting with the Head of Husbandry agency, the Head of Agriculture agency, Pandeglang Regency to draft working plan and MoU.
Objective 2 : By July 2013, the technological knowledge of modern agriculture and livestock farming in Cibadak village will increase.
Indicators : 1. A total of 30 farmers who have attended SRI organic farming training in Sukabumi already know and understand SRI organic farming, and as many as 10 buffaloes? owners know fattening techniques through caging system.
2. The formation of farmer groups in Cibadak village who apply SRI organic farming systems (System of Rice Intensification) and 10 buffalo owners who have implemented the buffalo fattening program through caging system.
Activities : 1. In June 2013, as many as 30 farmers do training of agricultural intensification (organic) to Sukabumi for 2 (two) days. That is because the farmers are implementing the conventional agricultural practices using chemical fertilizers. And the farmers don?t know the practice of SRI organic farming yet.
2. In July 2013, as many as 10 buffaloes owners attend training on buffalo fattening through caging system by Animal Husbandry and Animal Health Agency, Pandeglang Regency in Cibadak village for 1 (one) day. This is carried out so that the buffalo owners can absorb the knowledge about practices of fattening buffalo through caging systems, and other economically valuable benefits in addition to meat production. As the use of dung as an alternative energy source.
Objective 3
: In August 2013, farmers starting to implement the buffalo fattening program through caging system. And in September 2013, starting to implement SRI organic farming.
Indicators : 1. Ten buffalo owners who have had training from Animal Husbandry and Animal Health Agency, Pandeglang Regency starting to implement the buffalo fattening program through caging system.
2. Thirty farmers who have been trained on SRI organic farming in Sukabumi starting to implement SRI organic farming in the demonstration plots that have been approved
Activities :
A. Implementation of Buffalo Fattening Program:
1. Construct a semi-permanent buffalo cage as many as 10 rooms, each with a size of 1.5 m x 3m
2. Prepare, produce and plant the source of buffalo fodder in 2 (two) locations.
3. Buffalo vaccination periodically for 1 (one) year.
4. Make name plate of buffalo fattening program implementation through caging system, as part of a dissemination of program activities.
5. Make name plate of food sources location as much as 2 pieces.
6. Implement facilitation and Technical Guidance (Bimtek) to the program implementers
B. Application of SRI Organic Agricultural Program:
1. Preparation of one organic farming demonstration plot as site for organic farm field schools
2. Clear the land for the preparation of organic farming implementation as one-time activity.
3. Procurement of 1 pack of organic seeds
4. Procurement of 2 pack of organic fertilizer
5. Treatment of land for organic farming as much as 2 times
6. Implementation of planting organic crops in demonstration plots, 2 package
7. Create name plate of program and farmer groups in the location of demonstration plots, 2 pieces.
8. Carry out monitoring program implementation
Objective 4 : By the end of 2014, people in Cibadak village have applied SRI organic farming systems (System of Rice Intensification) and 10 buffalo owners have implemented buffalo fattening program through caging system and two demonstration plots for feed source are constructed in the location. In addition to that, there are new adopters who apply agricultural intensification program and the fattening buffalo through caging system.
Indicators : 1. The construction of two demonstration plot as 10 hectares of organic farming area, managed by a joint/forum of farmer groups, two field locations as feed source and the assignment of 10 buffalo owner who implement buffalo fattening program through caging system.
2. A total of 20 people (increasing 40%) are willing to become new adopter in SRI organic farming program.
3. The number of buffalo owners who will implement buffalo fattening program through caging system is added by other 10 people, with 100% increase to 20 people.
4. The number and acreage of organic farms demonstration plots increases to 20 hectares, the number of cage increases to 20 rooms and source of feed is grown in 4 locations.
Activities : Program discussion with the farmers and buffaloes owners groups for the transformation of knowledge programs that have been implemented to other communities, especially farmers and buffalo owners, which live in a buffer zone around Ujung Kulon National Park area
Objective 5 : Monitoring and evaluation of agricultural intensification program and buffalo fattening program through caging system
Indicators : 1. Proposals and suggestions from the participants? workshop about the implementation of a similar program in other places in buffer zone around Ujung Kulon National Park area.
2. Realization of the program in accordance with the schedule of the planned activities
Activities : 1. Program evaluation through workshops on agricultural intensification and buffalo fattening through caging system
2. Dissemination of success stories through the electronic media; radio, printed media, brochures and stickers
3. Preparation of final report
4. MoU with potential partners to replicate the success stories
EXPECTED OUTPUT
1. The productivity of agricultural land of communities in Cibadak village increases, so that people can save some of their income for savings and do not need to expand their arable land in the area of Ujung Kulon NP.
2. The number of farmers and buffalo owners who are adopting this program increase each year, at least 30% from the previous number, in 2014
3. Habitat of Java rhino in Ujung Kulon National Park is conserved and the land previously converted to paddy field can be rehabilitated into forest area through participatory method.
4. Wild grazing activities (buffalo) in Ujung Kulon National Park decreases, resulting in the avoidance of the potential of disease transmission to Java Rhinos.
5. Community or buffalo owners get increasing income, as productivity of buffalo meat increases.
6. This program can ensure regularity and reduce threats to conservation, particularly the habitat and the population of Java rhino.
Participants and/or Project Beneficiaries
Direct : Thirty farmers who apply SRI organic farming and 10 buffalo owners who implement the fattening program through caging system, with a ratio of 1: 3, assuming a 1 (one) female 3 (three) men.
Indirect : Indirect beneficiaries of an intense, integrated agricultural program is the stakeholder of ung Kulon National Park area (Ujung Kulon NP Service), the community in Cibadak Village as much as 2,770 people, the community in 12 villages in Cimanggu district as many as 37,003 people, the Local Government of Pandeglang Regency and Banten Province
