Conservation and Awareness in partnership with South Waghji Schools - Jiwaka

This project will be seeking to work within Simbu Province with identified 5 schools, both primary and high school to participate in tree planting exercise to an estimated total of 15,000 seedlings to be distributed, construction of ten nurseries and awareness material to be developed and distributed.

Awareness is the main activity that is used to include significant participation of Indigenous Peoples . Awareness is made in English, Tok Pisin and the local vernacular for better understanding.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Procurement activities by the project contributes to revenue generation for the small business houses and local farmers in the community. Involvement of women in the project raises a new hope for the girls and young women in the community so there is equity in wealth distribution

The grantee's capacity is okay to implement the project.

Notable Community Participation

The involvement of youths is captured in the tree seedlings distribution to the five schools in the province.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The knowledge management strategy is through training of the CBOs, awareness activity and tree seedling distribution to the five schools in the province. Knowledge pool is created through the one tree per child program and also through the training of the 10 CBOs. The knowledge product is sustainable forest use and management while addressing Climate Change, Land Degradation, Biodiversity Conservation.

Gender Focus

The project has balanced the role of men and women in the community. The CBOs whom the grantee trained comprises of eight male and two female. However, there lies a need for the project to inform the community to increase the number of female representatives.

There is potential to influence development of relevant plans at sub-national level

Project Results

Tranch 1 results-
10 CBOs have received nursery training and knowledge pool of the focal area is already created while addressing the Gender Balance in the community through the inclusion of the two female CBOs. Procurement for nursery items and other associated costs have been made to small bushiness houses and local farmers thereby have contributed to revenue generation in the community.
Tranch 2 results-
-CBO partners have confirmed that 15,000 seedlings is ready for distribution to schools
-At least 3000 ICM materials was produced and distributed to South Waghi Schools. 2000 handbooks for climate change and environment conservation was produced for schools, together with teacher guides on use of this handbooks.
