Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Livelihoods Project in Wuzu Village, Shangri-La, Yunnan
This project site is located in Wuzhu village, the Jinshajiang River valley area of Three Parallel Rivers WHS in Yunnan Province. Tibetan, Naxi, Han, Bai, Miao, Lisu, Yi and Pumi group habitat in this area. Forest is about 2667ha. from 1900m to 3300m latitude. There is rich biodiversity in project site including first -grade and second grade state protection animal, bird and plant species. Animal husbandry and agriculture are the main source of income. In 2017, the total economic activities in Wuzhu village worth 22.1 million RMB, and the annual income per capita is 5,349 RMB.

Main problems:
1. Fragile ecosystem with low resilience, ecological and biodiversity conservation in general is under pressure.
2. Land use per capita is limited, and the economic development is still at a low level.

Solutions/Activities:
1) Enhance public awareness on biodiversity conservation and enhance individual capacity through community capacity-building workshops.
2) Restoration of wetlands (Haizi) and traditional landscapes.
3) Protect community water conservation forest, reforest in eco-fragile area and return farmland to forest.
4) Explore diversified sustainable livelihoods and increase communities? income.
5) Publicity and promotion of project results.

Anticipated results:
1) 4000 people deepened their cognition on the value of biodiversity
2) 2667ha. of forest protected
3) 500 students have the knowledge of biodiversity and ecological conservation
4) 60 people trained with eco-tourism knowledge
5) return 4ha. of farmland to wetland and rehabilitate community traditional landscape
6) 133ha. of eco-fragile area restored with forest and 67ha. of forest under sustainable management
7) 20 households' income increased 80000Yuan per year through beekeeping, community's income increased 48000Yuan per year through medicinal plants cultivation; 60 people's income increased 400000Yuan through mushroom planting and 80 households' income increased 3000Yuan per capita through developing farmers' cooperative
5) A set of environmental education material produced and adopted by schools. 500 copies of handbook distributed. 6 articles published and outreach to at least 2,000 people in Wechat platform. 20000 people influenced by media and school education activities.
