Conservation Of Marine Resources For Improved Community Livelihoods In Wasini Island
Conservation Of Marine Resources For Improved Community Livelihoods In Wasini Island
The Wasini Island plays host to a variety of important biodiversity including a 5km² mangrove forest which has a total of 5 species of mangroves. The mangrove ecosystem is adjoined by an area of intact coral reef ecosystems that is adorned with sea weeds, which host various species of fish including an endemic grouper. The nearby marine waters have also extensive sea grass beds which in previous years provided rich fishing grounds for the local as well as inshore fishing communities. The resources however face various threats which includes over exploitation, resource use conflicts, limited awareness among local community members on the applicable national laws and policies, and climate change.

This proposed project intends to address natural resource degradation, poverty alleviation, provision of alternative sources of livelihood and improvement of hygiene, sanitation and the environment for local communities within Wasini village. This will be realised through building local community capacity for sustainable resource management, improving community incomes by developing alternative income generating projects and ensuring effective management of finances generated by the group through ecotourism.
